Matthew Z. "Mat"  Janicki Sr.
Matthew Z. Janicki Sr.

Matthew Z. Janicki Sr., of New Castle, age 78, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Saturday, September 29, 2012, after a long illness. Born October 14, 1933 to Mary Kantorowski and Charles Janicki, he was raised on S. Harrison St. in Wilmington Delaware. In his early years, he developed a passion for sports while attending St. Hedwig’s. He graduated from the original Wilmington High School in 1951, where he played football.
Mr. Janicki served in the US Army during the Korean War. After meeting, his wife, Marjorie Gallagher, at a dance at the Armory in Wilmington, they married in 1957 at St. Peter’s Church in New Castle. He began his employment experience with Pullman Railroad Service and Motor Wheel Corporation. He then became a letter carrier with the USPS for 35 years. Mat shared his passion for sports with many players for over 30 years coaching at Holy Spirit School. He enjoyed spending time with his family, working in the yard, and having a scotch while watching Notre Dame and Dallas Cowboy football. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margie Janicki; son, Matthew Jr. (Donna); daughter, Monica Esterling (Bill Jr.); son, Martin Janicki (Shana); daughter, Maura Romanik (Brent); 8 grandchildren; brother, Ronald Janicki (Mary Lou); sister, Teddy Joachimowski (Joe); many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Spirit Church, on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 11 am. Friends may call at the church Wednesday evening from 6-8 pm. Interment will be at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Mat’s name to Holy Spirit Church, 12 Winder Road, Garfield Park, New Castle, DE 19720.
