Obituary for William L "Bill" Kirk

On November 25, 2014, Bill passed away while lovingly surrounded by his children and grandchildren.

Bill was a Wilmington native and lived in the area his entire life. He went to Brown Technical High School. He served in the military as a Navy Seabee. He was a Wilmington firefighter, retiring as Lieutenant after 31 years of service. While working as a firefighter, he worked for the A&P Supermarket in Brandywine Hundred. After retiring from the fire department, he worked for a number of years at Delaware Trust at 9th and Market.

He was a dedicated parishioner and member of St. Thomas the Apostle R. C. Church. He thoroughly enjoyed socializing with his many friends over the years by marching in the St. Patrick's Day Parade with the Durney Post, attending events at NCC Irish Cultural Society, playing shuffle board at Stapler, playing pinochle at both Sellers and Fraims Senior Center and having a few drinks at Mulrooney's.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Veronica (Vera Baltrush), with whom he raised their five children. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Marianne Kirk Patille; his brothers, Francis and Martin; his sister, Mary Ellen O’Rourke.

Bill is survived by his son, Marty Kirk (Nancy); his daughters, Sheila Whitehead (Barry), Patty Dougherty (Dennis), and Paula Wardell (Sam). Bill also loved and cherished his 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He had a multitude of nieces and nephews from the Kirk and Baltrush sides of the family.

Relatives and friends are invited to the Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, December 3, at 10:00 am. A viewing will take place at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Highway, Elsmere on Tuesday, December 2, from 6:00-8:00 pm. Interment will take place in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
