Obituary for Clelia Dougherty (Peco)

Passed away on Wednesday, December 9, 2015, at Christiana Hospital.

Clelia was raised in Wilmington with her two brothers and three sisters. She was a graduate of Wilmington High School and Goldey Beacom College. She had several positions with federal government, the most interesting of which was a U.S. Marshal.

In 1952, Clelia married Francis Dougherty, and together they raised three sons. She was a longtime member of Corpus Christi Parish. After raising her family, she returned to the workforce as secretary to the Executive Chief of Medicine at the Memorial Hospital. After her retirement, Clelia remained active in her community by volunteering at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Christiana Care, and the Emmanuel Dining Room. She enjoyed family and was a great Italian cook.

Clelia was preceded in death by her husband, Francis “Doc” Dougherty; her two brothers, Charles and Anthony; and her three sisters, Rose, Mary, and Josephine. She is survived by her children, Christopher, Daniel (Anne), Peter; two grandsons, Daniel and Andrew; and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to the Mass of Christian Burial at Corpus Christi R. C. Church, 901 New Road, Elsmere, on Wednesday, December 16, at 11:30 am. A visitation will take place at the church on Wednesday morning from 10:00-11:30 am. Burial will be in Cathedral Cemetery.
