Leon Stanley  Wasno
Passed away peacefully at Seasons Hospice Christiana Hospital on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 following a brief illness.
Born and raised in McAdoo, PA, Leon was a 1951 graduate of McAdoo High School where he excelled at football and basketball. Upon graduation, he moved to Delaware and enlisted in the Army during the Korean War. On May 10, 1958, he married Dolores Delphine Cheklinski of Nanticoke, PA. He retired as a general foreman from General Motors Boxwood Plant after 33 years of dedicated service. Leon was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Dolores in March, 2013, his parents, Alexander and Beatrice (Grybosh) Wasno, and his brothers John, Joseph, and Paul.
Leon is survived by his sister, Marion Kruba (Gerald) of Duncannon, PA. His sons Greg (Denise) and Gary. He was “Dziadzi” to grandchildren Matthew of Charlotte, NC, Zachary, and Kaitlyn Wasno. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Leon was affectionately called “Mr. Waz” by his son’s closest friends.
Leon was an active member of Corpus Christi R.C. Church for over 50 years, and was involved in many committees and church councils. He was also an honorary life member of Knights of Columbus (55 years). He enjoyed gardening, cooking, playing the daily lottery, and listening to talk radio. He was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies. In recent years, he often watched the Fox News Network and participated in lively debates with visitors to his home.
The family is eternally grateful to the staff at Christiana Hospital in the ACE unit and Seasons Hospice. Around the clock, each member in District 3 went above and beyond to make him as comfortable as possible as well as extending support to his family. The extraordinary dedication and compassionate care given to Leon during the past 3 weeks will not be forgotten.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at Corpus Christi R. C. Church, 901 New Road, Elsmere, DE 19805, on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at 12 noon. Friends may call at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Hwy, Elsmere on Thursday morning from 10-11:30am. Internment in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Hwy., Wilmington.
