Obituary for Peter P D'Amico

Passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2016, after a long illness, surrounded by his family and friends.
He was born in Wilmington, DE on November 30, 1931. He attended Sacred Heart School and was a 1949 graduate of Salesianum School. As a young man, he served our country in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves in Cape May, NJ and at Governors Island, NY. In 1951 he was employed by the Chrysler Corp. at the Newark, DE tank plant and became a supervisor in the planning department. In 1955 he entered the automotive leasing industry, first working for Rollins Leasing Company where he became the National Director of Public Relations. In 1961 he became the Eastern Regional Sales Manager for Executive Car Leasing, a subsidiary of PepsiCo Corp. in Purchase, NY. In 1972 he founded and was president of LIBCO Leasing Corp., a national car & truck fleet leasing company with offices in Wilmington DE and New York
He had a life-long passion for sports, especially the game of basketball. At Salesianum he was the captain of the 1948-49 championship basketball team and was a first team All-Stater. One of his great joys was successfully coaching parochial league basketball in the 1960’s at St Elizabeth Grade School. He took pride in not only teaching young men the right way to play the game, but also taught them life’s lessons of faith, family, and hard work. He was also proud of his work in helping start the F. John Birkeneuer, OSFS Scholarship Fund which provides scholarships every year to Salesianum School.
Most of all Peter treasured spending time with his family. He spent many days playing pick-up games of basketball and touch football and spending time at the beach. He enjoyed watching sports traveling and dining out with family and friends. He enjoyed the arts especially music. As a young boy he studied music and was an accomplished guitarist by the age of 13. He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his twin children, Paul and Susan, and by his parents, Amore and Delia D’Amico.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years; Patricia M.; his sons, Peter J. (Marilynn) of Wilmington, Christopher J. (Maryann) of Wilmington, DE, Theodore G. (Sunshine) of Wilmington, and Patrick A. (Stephanie) of Middletown; his daughter, Paula M. Graney (Kevin) of Hockessin. He is also survived by his sisters, Marie Noplock of Baltimore, MD, and Judy Shafer and her husband, Kim of Washington, DC; and his brother, Anthony D’Amico and his wife, Moira of New York City. In addition, he is survived by his grandchildren, Robert, James, Maura, Samantha, and Jacqueline.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Joseph P. Loughran M.D. of Loughran Medical Group for the wonderful medical care he provided for over 30 years and for his longtime friendship with our father. We also like to thank the staffs of Fresenius Kidney Care in Newport, DE and Seasons Hospice for their kindness and compassionate care of Peter.
