Passed away peacefully on December 5, 2016, after a long struggle with COPD.
She was born on March 5, 1932 in Wilmington, DE to the late Carmen A. Sylvester and Christine (DeMarco) Sylvester.
After graduation from Wilmington High School on 1949, Ann worked at Braunstein’s Department Store, then joined DuPont where she worked as a secretary for over 24 years, retiring in 1993. Ann married James (Fitzie) Fitzgerald on August, 1955 and had four children, whom she took great pride in raising.
Ann had a strong presence, was direct, honest, and extremely generous. She loved going to the beach, taking long walks at Battery Park, and monthly trips to Atlantic City to the Showboat Casino before they closed, where she enjoyed the perks of being a long-standing Diamond Club member. Most recently, she enjoyed trips to Delaware Park. Ann was also an excellent baker, and at Christmas time, she shared her delicious bite-sized variety of cookies with family and friends.
Ann was preceded in death by her husband, James J. Fitzgerald (1986); her beloved son, James (Jimmy) Fitzgerald (2012); and her brother, James J. Sylvester (2006). She is survived by her devoted son, John M. Fitzgerald, and his wife, Kathleen of Claymont, DE.; daughters; Christine Santo of Lewes DE, and Patricia Igo of Newark. Ann has 7 grandchildren, of which Kimberly and Kevin Swain shared a special bond throughout their youth; and one great-grandchild. She also valued a special friendship for over 20 years with James Grant.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 9th and Dupont Streets,
Wilmington, DE 19805 on December 9, at 12:00pm. Viewing will be held at the church prior to the Mass from 11:00am -12:00pm. Interment will follow at Cathedral Cemetery.
